Eliminating the scourge of war is perhaps the most momentous and challenging task facing humanity. Around the globe, seemingly endless cycles of violence unfold, with each new act of revenge calling forth yet another violent response. In the last 20 years over 6 million people, mostly civilians, have been killed in what amounts to a worldwide epidemic of ethnic, religious, and civil wars. Those who survive are often displaced or disabled, their families scattered, and their communities destroyed. HEALING THE WOUNDS OF WAR chronicles the Karuna Center For Peacebuilding, a non-profit organization based in Amherst, Massachusetts, which aids war-torn societies around the world to develop effective ways to respond to conflicts without violence. The documentary focuses on their work with Serb and Muslim teachers as they seek to rebuild and reunite their devastated communities in the aftermath of the war in Bosnia. Three years of war in the early 1990s resulted in 250,000 deaths, 2 million refugees, and the destruction of a vibrant, multi-ethnic, highly educated, and prosperous society. It was during this war that the term “ethnic cleansing” entered the world’s vocabulary. In the film, the Bosnian Serb and Muslim educators engage in carefully structured dialogues in which they share the devastating impact of the war on themselves, their families and communities. Gradually, with support from the group, participants are able to address their fears and grow more confident in their ability to engage with each other and learn peacebuilding skills. Workshops address the root causes of conflict and explore methods for interrupting cycles of revenge. These settings provide a safe environment for participants to rebuild shattered relations and develop a culture of tolerance.
“Dialog is so very important. We will never be able to move forward if we aren’t able to sit at the same table and listen to each other’s needs, wishes, and hopes.” RECOMMENDED SUBJECT AREAS International Relations • Political Science • Sociology • Peace Studies • Politics of Peace and Conflict • Communications • Psychology • Politics & Government • Contemporary Social Movements • Human Rights • Social Change • Politics and International Law • Modern Political Thought • Philosophy of Nonviolence • The Balkans
